Morgan to host Elton Reece Pepsi Classic

There’s going to be a lot of baseball around Selma over the next three days.

The Morgan Academy baseball and softball teams will host the Elton Reece Pepsi Classic beginning Thursday at 10 a.m. and lasting through Saturday. The tournament, which will consist of 19 baseball and 20 softball teams, will honor Reece, who died March 30, 2015, of a stroke after many years coaching and directing Selma’s parks and recreation department.

“He’s done so much for not only Morgan but our community of Selma,” said Morgan baseball head coach Jeremy Carter. “Being the Selma rec leader for so long, I felt like it was the right move. He was great to work for and work with.”

Elton’s son, Todd, will throw out the first pitch Thursday morning before the first game at Morgan.

Games will be played at Morgan and Bloch Park, as well as the Complex and Sportsplex. Most baseball teams will play four games and softball teams will play five games.

Carter said he is glad the weather is expected to clear up for the weekend, and he said the fields will be ready for the tournament despite the recent rainfall.

He also said the baseball field at Morgan, which underwent construction this fall, is about 95 percent completed.

Morgan’s baseball team will play at Thursday and Saturday at noon and 4 p.m. The Senators’ opponents will include Pike, Monroe, Kingwood and Marengo. Softball will begin on Friday and continue with elimination games on Saturday.

The Morgan baseball team is currently 2-2. Carter said he wanted to schedule as many games as possible before his team starts playing area games so that his players can be as prepared as possible for their area opponents.

Early in the season, weather has affected the amount of games Morgan has been able to play.

“We had a couple of rainouts already, so we need some more games before we get into area play,” Carter said.
