The future of the Brown YMCA building was discussed at Thursday’s Selma City Council work session.
Kimesha Sunshine Alvarado spoke about a proposal for Circle of Love Outreach, Inc. to take $100,000 that has been set aside for Brown renovations and future lodging fees so that nonprofit can build a recreational center for youth in the community.
Only three council members were present for Alvarado’s proposal, Angela Benjamin, Susan Keith and Cecil Willamson.
The terms of a contract that expired Jan. 31 state that the YMCA could sell the Brown building to the city of Selma at any time for $1. The council voted last week to split the $2 lodging tax evenly between the YMCA of Selma and Dallas County and the Brown fund.
Over the past three years, $295,221 has been raised to help the YMCA pay down debt and make capital improvements. There’s an additional $94,649 in the Brown YMCA fund, which hasn’t been touched.
Alvarado ensured those present that Circle of Love would be the right organization to bring the building back to relevance in the community.
Alvarado said that she hopes that money can go to the Circle of Love to restore the Brown building.
“One thing is sure. Circle of Love is not and will not put a hurting on the city of Selma,” Alvarado said.
While a final decision wasn’t made Thursday, Benjamin made her stance on the issue clear.
“We should get out of this business because it’s the YMCA’s business,” Benjamin said. “They agreed that they are willing to sell it for a dollar.”
With many of the councilmen and women not present Thursday for the City Hall meeting, which was moved up an hour from its normal time slot, much of the discussion of what to do with the YMCA will have to wait until next week.
“We’re going to put this on the agenda for Tuesday, and we’re going to see one way or the other Tuesday night,” said Councilman Cecil Williamson.
