Selma native and Cincinnati Bengals player Michael Johnson always hosts his cheer and football camp in April, but this year’s he’s adding on a career expo too.

Johnson’s foundation, the MJ93-90 Foundation, will host the expo Friday, April 15 at the Wallace Community College Selma gymnasium from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

A list of what businesses and companies will attend has not been finalized this early into the process.

The following day Johnson will host his seventh annual Michael Johnson Football and Cheer Camp at Memorial Stadium.

“Each year we try to do something a little bit differently so we can reach out to kids who are interested in something other than football,” said Michael’s mother, Thomasene, who helps plan all of the events for Michael’s foundation.

The organization is expecting to have high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from around the state at the career expo.

Thomasene said the career expo fits perfectly with what Michael is trying to accomplish in Selma, which is to give back to youth in an effort to help them achieve their dreams.

“People … have reached back and helped me out throughout my life,” Michael said during an interview with the Times-Journal in October. “I want to be able to do the same for other people and to encourage other people to do the same for others. You want to be able to slingshot somebody past you. I think if we all take that mentality, we can do some amazing things.”

Last year, more than 200 children took in Johnson’s football and cheer camp. Thomasene said she’s not sure if other NFL players will join her son at this year’s camp, but Michael always seems to bring someone else along.

Last year, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Clinton McDonald and former University of Alabama tight end Colin Peek helped Johnson at the camp.

“After all the planning, I’m always excited,” Thomasene said. “It’s something we can actually do for the city and the kids in the city.”

Registration for the camp is ongoing on the foundation’s website, MJ93.org. According to the website, the cost to register is $20 per child.
