Selma High School’s band will host a special Valentine’s Day Jazz Banquet.

After several successful Summer Jazz Fest performances, Band Director Brandon Williams thought a similar banquet for Valentine’s would be a fun, community-friendly fundraiser.

“Usually for Valentine’s Day most people go out of town. They don’t stay in Selma to take their significant others out on the town or anything like that. I figured that this way they could get good live music, good food and good entertainment,” Williams said.

The banquet will be held at the Selma Convention Center on Feb 14. at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Selma High School band room.

Williams said that this event is for everyone, including families. Attire for the banquet is dressy casual, no jeans.

The Selma High School Jazz Band will perform songs of jazz artists Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Erskine Hawkins, Glenn Miller and others.

“It gives the students who have never been to our events a chance to see that the band is doing big things,” Williams said. “I don’t expect it to be typical, I expect it to be very elegant.”

President of the SHS Band Booster Club Felicia Tinker feels that the fundraiser was a good idea. She expects a big turnout.

“We hope people in the community to come out and support the band. Most of the time people just see the band at the stadium or at games,” Tinker said. “This way, people can share an intimate setting with the band and get to see their performance in a smaller setting.”

Money raised will contribute to the SHS band program to purchase equipment.
