The Selma Parks and Recreation Department and All in Sports Outreach are providing free camps to help players improve their games before the start of the baseball and softball seasons.

The recreation department will hold a baseball camp on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Sportsplex and a softball camp Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Complex.

Unlike the first camps held last year, each camp will be divided by age group. The times are the same for both camps.

Youth ages 7-8 will meet at 9 a.m., ages 9-10 will meet at 10:30 a.m. and children 11-and-12 will meet at noon.

City of Selma Baseball Director Jamie Tellier said dividing players into age groups will allow instructors to focus on different skill sets.

“You are going to tell them things a little differently,” Tellier said. “Attention span is different. With the 7-and 8-year-olds we will still have stations like we do for the 9-and 10 and 11-and 12, but you’ll have to make them quicker because the attention span isn’t there as it would be with an 11-and-12 year old.”

Anyone that is interested in being a volunteer coach for the camp can contact the Selma Parks and Recreation Department at 874-2140.

“I’ve had a lot of people tell me they’ve been waiting on the recreation department to do camps,” Tellier said.

“I think more than anything it’s showing we aren’t just going through the motions. We want to make the program better.”

Tables will be set up at the camps to allow parents to register their child for the upcoming baseball and softball season.

Those that want to go ahead and register than child before then are encouraged to do so. Registration for the season is underway now and will continue Monday-Friday at the recreation office at Memorial Stadium from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

A $10 fee is required to register, regardless of whether or not a player has participated in the past.

The child does not have to be present to be registered but a birth certificate or a form of identification that shows the child’s date of birth is required.
