Morgan Academy has made a midseason coaching change to its girls’ basketball program.

Caroline Averitt, who was the school’s volleyball coach and girls’ basketball coach, will not be coaching the basketball team for the remainder of the season. Head boys’ basketball coach Lee Tate has taken over as the girls’ basketball coach and is now responsible for both teams.

Multiple efforts to contact Averitt this week were unsuccessful. It’s unclear if she is still employed by Morgan Academy, where she also taught science, physical education and girls’ health.

This season was Averitt’s first year coaching the girls’ basketball team and her first full year coaching the school’s volleyball team.

Mary Margaret Mims, who sits on Morgan Academy’s Board of Directors’ athletic committee, declined comment. Morgan headmaster Pete Williamson, who coached the girls’ basketball team in the recent Morgan Academy Pepsi Classic, also had no comment.

Williamson has since handed the team over to Tate.

Now that he’s coaching both teams, Tate said he’s adjusted his coaching methods and his sleep schedule.

“I’m coaching more,” Tate said. “More than I ever have, and I’ve never coached girls before so that’s all brand new, but they learn real quickly and they’re real smart.”

Tate said he is grateful for the time he spent coaching at Morgan with Averitt.

“I’m sorry she’s gone,” Tate said. “She was very helpful to me, so I have nothing but appreciation for what she did for me and I wish her the best.”

Morgan’s girls’ basketball team is 4-9 after a loss at Autauga Academy Thursday. Morgan hosts Hooper Academy Tuesday.
