2016 starts with much promise for Selma but still plenty left to accomplish

Over the next couple of days, we will continue our “Year in Review” series, looking back at all the news in Selma during 2015.
It was the kind of year those of us who lived here will never forget and it’ll be hard for any year to match it going forward.
However, it’s time to move forward. The year 2015 ended a few hours ago, when all of the parties wound down and the butterfly drop commenced at the St. James Hotel.
Instead of looking back, it’s time to look ahead to 2016, which promises to be a tremendous year as well. We’re hopeful it’ll be a prosperous one for Selma.
We’d like to begin the new year by thanking our readers and online subscribers, as well as our advertisers, who trust us to spread their message.
We’re looking forward to what’s on the horizon for Selma this upcoming year. It’s unlikely 2016 will include a visit from Oprah Winfrey, Jim Harbaugh or any of the stars from the “Selma” movie, but that’s OK. Many visitors will still be coming to our city to celebrate the 51st anniversary of Bloody Sunday during March or to see the real life city after watching it at the movie theater.
If anything. 2015 showed just how much is possible in Selma when different people and organizations come together.
This city — and all cities — will always improve when citizens take it upon themselves to solve problems and in turn create a better place to live.
We hope that continues to be a trend again in 2015 — people coming together to make Selma a better place to live. Happy New Year!
