Selma residents could tune in Monday to support a good cause.
From 6 a.m. until 11 a.m., members of the Rotary Club of Selma cycled through Dixie Country Super Station reading ads for their second annual Rotary Radio Day.
“That’s our contribution … to give them air time, and we are glad to do it,” said Carolyn Rowell, promotions director of Dixie Country Super Station.
Rotary Club of Selma is a local chapter of a nonprofit international service organization.
“It’s a lot of fun with all of these Rotarians, and they’re all comics,” said Bob Kelley, a board director for the local club.
Patrons who purchased an ad were given two options to help support the fundraiser.
The first option was a one-liner ad that was written from a template for $50. For a $100 donations, patrons were able to write their own ad.
Kelley said there were roughly 95 organizations and businesses that participated in this year’s Radio Day. He said the club raised $8,500 this year compared to $4,500 in 2014.
Kelley said the club had gotten the idea from the former Kiwanis Club in Selma.
“When the Kiwanis Club stopped, I was thinking to myself, ‘Hmm, why don’t we do this?’” Kelley said.
He said with the help of Mike Reynolds, president of Dixie Country Super Station, and B. Lee Youngblood, former Kiwanis Club member, they were able to organize the event and make it successful. Susan Keith also helped organize the fundraiser.
“I think we will do this as long as they’ll have us at the radio station,” Kelley said.
Money raised from the event will be used toward their efforts of bettering the community, which includes developing scholarships at local high schools, charity donations and community projects.
