Councilwoman Angela Benjamin and other volunteers treated women at the Light House Rehabilitation and Health Care Center on Monday afternoon with beauty treatments and gifts.
Residents had a chance to get their nails and hair done while listening to music and singing Christmas carols. They also got earrings, bracelets, lotion and lipstick as gifts.
Molley Albarez, 86, said that she always looks forward the event.
“I feel that she [Benjamin] did a superb job, and I hope that she can come again. We all were looking forward to it,” Albarez said.
She said that her favorite part of the event was having visitors to come see her and the rest of the residents.
Administrator of Light House Armelia Oliver said that it brings her great joy to know that the residents are happy and in more of a Christmas spirit in result of the event.
“It brings a lot of Christmas spirit to them and enhances their social lifestyle,” Oliver said.
Benjamin said that she had been visiting nursing homes for years before she even became a council member. Light House is in her ward.
Although she has been visiting Light House and other nursing homes as regular service sites for years, this is the first time that she has implemented “Beauty and Barber Day.”
“We’ve been coming here for about seven or eight years, longer than I have been a council member. When I became a council member, I found out was in my ward. So, every year we come back here, and we do something for either Easter or Christmas.”
She believes that it is important to serve our senior citizens.
“In their golden years, we should be giving back to them. I think that it is important that we take care of all of our wisdom that is still here,” Benjamin said.
