The Knights of Revelry hosted their 82nd annual ball — a night full of tradition and dancing — Friday at the Selma Country Club.
Attorneys Harry Gamble and Edward Stewart founded the Knights of Revelry in 1933 to provide some entertainment and levity during the Great Depression.
Harry Gamble attended the University of Virginia, where there is a similar dance tradition. Stewart attended Sewanee: The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and contributed some of his own ideas too.
“They put all of this together and started this party where we have a king, along with a court and ladies who would be introduced as they came out,” said Bill Gamble, Harry’s son and longtime herald for the Knights of Revelry.
At 9:30 p.m., the Knights of Revelry slowly entered the ballroom by hierarchy, with the oldest knight of membership entering first. They walked along the edges of the ballroom while tapping their canes until it was time to introduce the new king and queen.
Two knights escorted the new Bi-Ski King LXXXV Fletcher Majors and queen Linda Majors to the throne.
After the king and queen were seated, it was time to announce the ladies. The ladies entered the ballroom, one-by-one, as their names were called. They walked to the throne and received a gift after greeting the new king and queen.
Once all the ladies had been announced, Majors cited his proclamation and invited guests to the dance floor.
