Less guns on the street should help Selma’s crime rate, make people feel safe

Crime will never be completely eliminated from our society, but less guns in the hands of criminals can help save lives and make people feel safe inside the walls of their own home.

Macedonia Apostolic Church, the Selma Police Department and others that helped make the fourth annual gun buyback program happen deserve a pat on the back.

Pastor Robert Pettus and Selma Police Chief John Brock know the program will never get every illegal gun off the street, but each one that is collected could save someone’s life.

This year’s buyback, which was held yesterday, resulted in 51 guns being turned over to the Selma Police Department. Those 51 guns, whether they have been used to commit crimes or just sitting in a closet, will never be used to commit a crime.

The church had just over $5,000 to purchase guns with, and it is the people that donate money to the program that help make it a success. For those that pitched in, a little money can go a long way in stopping one potential crime from happening.

Each gun that was collected was worth $75 in cash, and it is better see people with a little extra cash in their pocket than with a gun that could be used to hurt someone.

This program is one of the many ways the Selma Police Department, churches and city government are using to stop crime. We hope to see even more guns collected at the next buyback, and we encourage anyone with a gun that could be used for a crime to be sold back and put out of commission.
