The Edmund Pettus Bridge was shut down for approximately two hours Saturday night because a 34-year-old Dallas County man threatened to jump from it.
According to Sgt. Evelyn Ghant with the Selma Police Department, officers were dispatched to the foot of the bridge around 6:30 p.m. in reference to a man threatening to do bodily harm to himself.
Soon after, all four lanes of the bridge were closed, and they were not reopened until approximately 8:40 p.m.
Ghant said the man was going through personal issues and was calling out for help, but did not release any additional details.
At one point, the man was seen straddling the rail of the bridge after an officer stepped closer to him.
At 8:33 p.m., “suspect in custody” could be heard over a radio from a member of the Selma Fire Department.
After nearly two hours of talking the man down, officers were able to get him away from the ledge.
“We had to talk him down and try to convince him to get the proper help,” Ghant said,
The 39-year-old was then taken to the Vaughan Regional Medical Center for a mental evaluation.
“He just had some personal issues, and he was crying out for help,” Ghant said. “Hopefully, [the hospital] can get him the proper help that he needs.”
Ghant said there are no charges at this time, but the investigation is still ongoing.
The Selma Police and Fire Departments responded to the call, and there was a rescue boat in the water below the bridge.
