Dozens of golfers came out Wednesday to play in Selma Mayor George Evans’ annual charity tournament.
The event goes to support special needs children and programs across Selma and Dallas County.
The tournament, now in its sixth year, stretches over two days.
The first day includes a part with special needs children. It’s a great event that allows the children and their families to come together and enjoy games, food and each other’s company.
The second day includes the golf tournament at Valley Grande Golf Course.
Registration fees benefit Cahaba Mental Health, West Alabama Rehabilitation-Easter Seals, Selma City Schools, Dallas County Schools and other organizations that serve special needs children in the area.
In total, more than $10,000 was raised from the tournament to support these organizations and the important work they do.
Kudos to Mayor George Evans and his staff for their work and dedication to a segment of the population often overlooked.
“The special needs program is one of my favorites because these people may be overlooked in some situations, but they’re just as a part of society as we are. They have a place in society, and they all need to be treated like that,” Evans said.
The Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce also does much to plan and promote the golf tournament.
Several Selma businesses also stepped up to help with sponsorships, donations and door prizes.
