After getting off to a 3-0 start to the season, the Ellwood Christian Eagles (3-2) lost their second consecutive game Friday in a 48-0 loss to the Verbena Red Devils (3-2).
Tristan Short started the scoring for Verbena by passing to Dorrian Parker for a touchdown with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Anthony Miller was good on the point-after, as he was on a 27-yard field goal with 7:41 to go in the second quarter and another field goal later in the quarter.
The Red Devils led 13-0 at halftime.
Short then passed to Miller for a 55-yard touchdown with 9:56 remaining in the third quarter before Miller kicked his third field goal of the game to make it 22-0.
Short ran it in himself with time winding down in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Short threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Tyus to make the score 36-0 with 7:48 left to play in the game, but the Devils weren’t through.
Johnathan Bryant ran in a 44-yard touchdown, and then in the final seconds of the game, Short was sacked and fumbled when Christopher Headley picked up the loose ball and ran 62 yards for a touchdown.
“We played hard tonight,” Verbena coach Mike Harris said. “We never quit. Defensively, we played our best game yet. Ellwood Christian has a really good team and they played well tonight.”
The schedule doesn’t get any easier as Ellwood Christian is home against Linden next Friday.
