The eighth speaker of the 2015 Selma Quarterback Club will be former Alabama linebacker and Green Bay Packer Rich Wingo.
Wingo joins a notable cast of speakers that include The Blind Side’s Leigh Anne Tuohy and UAB head coach Bill Clark. Wingo is scheduled to speak to the quarterback club Nov. 24.
The Selma Quarterback Club will hold its first meeting Monday and club registration is still open. The two speakers who be will speaking at Monday’s meeting are Jay Tate and Andrew Bone. Tate is the owner and publisher of auburnsports.com and has been covering Auburn since 1998. Bone is the head recruiting analyst for the Tuscaloosa News and tidesports.com.
The captain of the Selma Quarterback Club, Ray Hogg, is excited for two experts on Auburn and Alabama to speak to the Selma community less than a week before the start of the college football season.
“They kind of know what’s going on and they’re pretty much in tune with their respective team and I thought each one could give us a great way to give an outlook to start the season,” Hogg said.
After Monday’s event, there will be two speaker events in September.
Former Georgia and Marshall head coach Jim Donnan will speak on Sept. 14. Jackie Burkett, former Auburn football player and No. 1 pick of the Baltimore Colts, will speak on Sept. 28.
October is a big month for the quarterback club. Tuohy will speak on Oct. 8 on ladies’ night and Clark will speak on Oct. 26.
Jack Crow, who was Bo Jackson’s offensive coordinator at Auburn, is going to be the speaker Nov. 9. Wingo has been scheduled to speak Nov. 24 for Father/Son-Daughter Night.
Hogg said he is excited to welcome Wingo as one of the speakers.
“He played five years with the Packers and he was actually Green Bay Packer MVP in 1979, so that’s pretty impressive,” Hogg said.
“He coached at Alabama for a couple of years and now he’s actually in the state house of representatives.”
Nov. 23 is also scholarship night, when the quarterback club announces the four people who will be awarded college scholarships as a result of the Selma Quarterback Club’s fundraising efforts.
“The neat thing about us is the scholarships we give away every year,” Hogg said.
“Last year, we awarded $16,000 in college scholarships to four young men from the Selma-Dallas County area and I just think that’s a tribute to the hard work of our organization and we do that every year.”
The final speaker is Paul Crane, who will speak on Dec. 7. Crane played for four years under Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, earning two All-SEC honors and one All-American honor.
To become a member of the Selma Quarterback Club contact Hogg at 875-1960 or W. Forrest Hatfield at 872-4042. The cost for an entire year’s membership is $175, which covers eight meetings, hearing the speakers and meals.
