Bloch Park could be seeing a few changes in the coming months.
Bloch Park was recently approved to sell advertising in order to raise enough money to update, renovate and bring more games to the vintage ballpark. Interim director of the recreation department Lebo Jones said he is excited for a chance to see positive changes come to a park he has been around all his life.
“It means a lot because myself and a lot of people in the city grew up playing ball there and you just like to take care of the field that you grew up playing on,” Jones said.
Each advertisement will be placed on the outfield fence of the ballpark and take up a space that is 5×8. An advertising block can be purchased for a year at a time beginning October 2015 to October 2016. One block costs $350 for the first year and $250 to renew for the next year.
The idea for advertising at Bloch Park had been in the works for three months, and Jones said it was something everyone he talked to was in support of. It was just a process of getting it finalized.
Jones plans to use the money raised from advertisements to make renovations to Bloch Park and to attract more teams to play at Bloch Park. He wants to start by renovating the bathrooms, storage rooms and locker rooms.
Jones said the goal is to have major college teams schedule exhibition games at Bloch Park and potentially minor league teams from Montgomery and Birmingham.
Jones has already talked to advertisers who want to purchase a spot at Bloch Park. He optimistic the park will see benefits from the advertising sooner rather than later.
“A lot of people seem to be interested in it, and hopefully pretty soon by October, we’ll have some signs out there on the fence,” Jones said.
