Garner, Park win titles at rain shortened club championship

It looked like the Selma Country Club Championship would come down to the wire Sunday afternoon, but Mother Nature had others plans.

Most participants in the men’s tournament had played seven to nine holes before thunderstorms hit the Selma area, soaking the golf course and forcing play to be halted for the day.

With another wave of storms on the horizon, the tournament committee wiped out Sunday’s incomplete rounds and only counted Saturday’s first round for the championship.

The decision left Paul Garner as the champion and marked the eighth time he’s won the championship.

Garner wasn’t pleased with the way he played in Saturday’s round, but his 71 was the lowest gross score of the week and good enough to get it done.

“I think we probably got a half and an inch of rain or so,” Garner said. “About 10 of the holes we would’ve been fine, but we have some low-lying holes out there that hold water and you couldn’t drive a cart through it or anything.”

Garner beat out Philip Nader and Paul Portwood by one shot after both players shot 72 in round one.

Although Sunday’s round didn’t count, he said he had a two shot lead on Nader when he was approaching the back nine and was looking forward to the final stretch, which is when the mental test in golf really kicks in.

“I really do like to finish those things,” Garner said. “The test comes internally toward the end and we hadn’t gotten there. You get to that spot where you are like ‘OK, you’ve got to hit a good one’ and that’s what we are all playing for, to see if we can do it when you have to do it.”

Barry Stephens, who shot 65 Friday, won the men’s net championship by two shots over Ken Morrison and three over Brett Wood and Caleb Morris.

The juniors and ladies teed off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and were able to complete their second rounds before the storm came in.

The ladies championship also had a familiar winner, with Sammi Park winning the title for what she estimated as the seventh time.

Park had a two-day total of 153 to win the championship by six shots over Barbara Moore. Park credited her success to the amount of work she puts into the game.

“You have to practice a lot. If you don’t practice, you can’t win any,” Park said. “When I need to practice, I come out here and practice … I do try to play at least twice, three times a week so I don’t forget my rhythms and mechanics.”

Fair Garner shot a 134 to win the 8-and-under girls championship.

Jude Assad had a 133 through two rounds for a 133 total to win the boys 8-and-under title,; Barron Frazer won the 9-and-10 boys with a 125; Jones Free shot a two day total of 152 to win the 11-and-12 boys title; and Thomas Morris shot 163 to edge out Gus Colvin Wilson for the 13-and-14 boys championship.
