First edition of new newspaper publishes

The first edition of a new publication, The Selma Sun, was published Thursday morning. It carries the slogan “It’s About You, It’s About Time” in its marketing materials.

The Sun’s first edition in tabloid form is led by Doug Marshall and Tom Ward. Ward and Marshall declined comment for this story. Both are from the Birmingham area, according to their LinkedIn profile pages.

Marshall, lists himself as the Sun’s vice president, secretary and treasurer, while Ward will serve as editor.

In addition to his work with the Sun, Marshall is chief financial officer and chief taxation officer of the Alabama Family Trust, a 501(c)(3) organization set up by Alabama statue to administer special needs trusts for disabled individuals, according to his LinkedIn profile.

According to his profile, he is also a life coach for Grace Ministries, a faith-based counseling, coaching and writing center in Birmingham. He has previously worked for UCP of Greater Birmingham and spent 25 years with ALGASCO/Energen.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Ward is chief executive officer for 4WardBooks.com, which specializes in publishing and public relations. According to that company’s website, Ward is the author of 10 books and has covered news and sports for seven newspapers in two states.

He is also the former executive director of Chattanooga Counseling and Meditation as well as Grace Ministries, according to Linkedin.

The Sun’s marketing materials states, “When The Selma Sun is delivered or purchased, readers won’t have to dread reading about murders, robberies, arsons and the petty battles in the Statehouse in Montgomery.”

The publication also says it will publish sports and free obituaries but will not publish editorials. There was no information on frequency of publication, how the Sun will be distributed and whether it will be free or by subscription.

The Selma Sun is renting office space on Broad Street across from the old Tepper’s Building.
