Finishing touches are being put on The Farm Depot, a bistro and market on Water Avenue.
The business is owned by Assata Nzingha Ma’at. Construction began in June and Ma’at said she is excited about the depot’s opening.
“We focus on local food grown in the Black Belt, like foods that are organic that prevent diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and other diseases,” she said. “I want to make healthy living affordable to all people in Selma.”
In addition to the restaurant, the market will also offer produce and meats. The business will also have smoothies and tea.
“People can also get locally-grown organic food cheaper than what they can buy traditional food for,” Ma’at said.
As a natural herbal doctor by trade and a farmer, Ma’at said her main objective is to create a healthier Selma.
“The food is affordable, fresh, organic and it’s something every person in Selma can have access to, and it supports our local economy,” Ma’at said. Ma’at said revenue from the restaurant and market would stay in the city of Selma.
“When you eat here, you’re supporting the actual development of the city of Selma, not just this business,” she said.
The Farm Depot is expected to open on Labor Day.
