The YMCA Youth Soccer League kicks off its first game on Tuesday, Aug. 18, but there is still time for players to register.
Registration for youth soccer at the YMCA of Selma-Dallas County is open until Wednesday and welcomes any players who are 3 years old all the way to 15 years old and up. The YMCA is still looking for parents and other individuals to volunteer as head coaches, assistant coaches and referees.
YMCA soccer instructor Winston Williams believes soccer is growing in popularity, and he expects soccer players to be more excited about playing in the YMCA Youth League this season.
“I think there’s a chance we’ll have a good push and enthusiasm here,” Williams said.
Williams is returning as the soccer instructor after working with the YMCA Youth Soccer League 20 years ago. He said this league is great for young soccer players who want to play in high school.
Many of the middle schools around Selma don’t have a soccer program, so the YMCA’s Youth Soccer League may be the only way for players to get the experience they need at the elementary and middle school level.
“Soccer is a year-long sport, so you need to have some opportunities for kids who are interested to go on to the next level,” Williams said.
While the older age groups provide players a chance to play competitive soccer, the younger age groups are all about having fun. Players in the 3- to 5-year-old age group will mostly be learning the fundamentals of soccer.
“It’s more teaching them not to use their hands and use their feet and the basics for that level,” YMCA senior director Kasey Burton said.
Around 60 to 70 kids have registered for the youth league this year, and Burton hopes more will follow before registration closes on Wednesday.
She said soccer is a growing sport not only in the United States but also in Selma.
Burton said if the interest and excitement around the YMCA Soccer League grows, it could have an effect on the number of schools that offer soccer for younger ages.
The league lasts until the end of October and costs $45 for YMCA members and $60 for non-members.
Games will be played at the City Baseball Complex.
Athletic apparel and shin guards are required apparel and cleats are preferred. Jerseys from the YMCA will be provided.
Registration forms can be picked up at the YMCA of Selma-Dallas County. To volunteer as a coach or referee, contact Kasey Burton at 874-9622.
