Flea Market quickly needs Saturday vendors

The city of Selma hoped to line Water Avenue with booths for people to sell unwanted or unused items, but Saturday’s flea market may be cancelled due to a lack of participation.
“It was actually scheduled for this past weekend, but it got changed around to Saturday, August 8,” said Pauline Williams, one of the market’s organizers. “But there is another possibility we will reschedule if we don’t have enough participants.”
According Williams, registration has been “poor.”
“Right now we only have two,” Williams said with disappointment. “We were going to make the cut off this evening (Thursday) about 4 p.m. If we don’t get at least 10 to 15 participants, there is a possibility we are going to cancel the event.”
Williams said 10 to 15 booths is the ideal number she has in mind for the market, but there is a possibility it could still go as planned if six people sign up before Friday afternoon.
“It just gives people an extra opportunity to make some extra cash for themselves. People love yard sales, flea markets and stuff like that,” Williams said. “It is a chance to clean out your closet.”
Williams said the market, which is part of the city of Selma’s “One Hot Summer” program, was something new for the city.
“We just thought it would be something new and something different to give citizens a chance to come out and get a booth and sell a lot of their unwanted or unused items they have in their garage or closets or whatever,” Williams said.
Despite the market being Saturday, Williams said there is still plenty of time for people that are interested in selling their unwanted items to register for a space.
“They can call myself or Shebra Kidd, or they can come to the city of Selma Tax Office and pay their space fee, which is $25,” Williams said.
Williams said the $25 fee goes back to the city, and people can contact her at 874-2109 or Kidd at 874-2169.
