Many of the same players that helped Selma’s 11-and-12 year-old baseball team make history continued their winning ways Saturday on the basketball court.

Darrius Ellis, Derrick Edwards Jr., Chris Gardner and Tyreshon Freeman — who all played on the Selma All-Star baseball team that finished third in the Ozone state tournament in July — were members of the TNA Heat’s sixth grade basketball team that won first place in a tournament in Pensacola, Fla. last week.

“I’m really proud of them,” said TNA Heat sixth grade coach Nathan Ellis, who also coached the players in baseball. “All summer long between basketball and baseball, both seasons have been successful ones, not only for me but also for the kids. I take my hat off to the kids because they really work hard trying to accomplish this.”

The TNA Heat’s sixth grade team placed in seven tournaments this summer, Ellis said. A total of 10 players were on the team.

TNA Heat defeated Light ‘em up in the tournament’s championship game and played three games overall on its way to the title. There were four teams in the sixth grade age division.

“It says that they are devoted to sports and they don’t mind working hard at it,” Ellis said of his team.

The TNA Heat is a travel basketball organization that operates out of Tuscaloosa and Selma. Earlier this summer, the organization held its annual Selma tournament at multiple locations across the city.
