Several organizations do their part to help youth prepare for school

Today is the first day back for students who attend Selma City Schools, and those that attend Dallas County Schools and other area schools will soon join them. As excited as some parents may be to send their children back to school, the reality of buying supplies, uniforms and more to get them ready has quickly set in.

School supplies can be very expensive. From notebooks and paper to glue, scissors and a book bag, it all adds up very fast.

But luckily, many people in the community have stepped up and done their part to provide hundreds of students with supplies to start the school year off right.

It’s amazing to see so many people, a lot of them without any children in school, work to ensure every student has what they need to begin school.

Saturday, Selma City Schools held a back-to-school bash at Selma High School where they held an annual uniform give away. At the same time, the Selma Police Department held their annual Cops and Kids Day where they gave away hundreds of bags of school supplies for free.

Tuesday, the Edmundite Missions held a back-to-school party where they handed out free supplies and offered free haircuts to boys.

Barbers and Billiards also offered free cuts and styles Tuesday to help get students looking their best for the first day back. Several other churches and organizations have also held events to give away items for school.

As Chad McEachern, missions’ director said, “The children are our hope for tomorrow,” and we need to do our part to assure they have the best possible future we can give them.

We are proud to be in a community that cares so much for its youth and the well-being of all local students.
