A 21-year-old Selma man crashed into a car Saturday night after he was shot in the back.
According to a press release from Lt. Curtis Muhannad with the Selma Police Department, officers responded to the 1400 block of St. Phillips Street around 10:35 p.m. Saturday night to a shots fired call.
A few minutes later a patrol officer was following a car that was driving recklessly on Highland Avenue.
“The officer observed the vehicle continue reckless driving and attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle,” Muhannad said in the release. “The vehicle [then] collided with another vehicle.”
When the officer made contact with the vehicle, which was occupied by two people, the driver told him he had been shot in the back and was driving to the emergency room.
According to Muhannad, the victim was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center and was later airlifted to a Montgomery hospital.
“The passenger was treated at Vaughan Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained during the traffic accident,“ Muhannad said.
According to Muhannad, the shooting is still under investigation. Details on how the 21-year-old was shot have not been released yet, and it is unknown if anyone else was hurt in the traffic accident.
The Selma Police Department is asking anyone with information on the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-442-7463 or the Selma Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 874-2125.
