Many of the participants in Saturday’s Member-Guest Golf Tournament at the Selma Country Club spent Friday night playing the course in a way they might not have recognized.
A nine hole par-3 tournament kicked off the weekend, giving players a chance to have a little fun before things get a little more competitive Saturday. Tommy Burns, who serves as the PGA professional at the country club, set up the course where players would be in one fairway and hit the ball to greens they normally wouldn’t play to.
“You get different looks from different areas of the course that you don’t on a normal day for someone who plays this course on a weekly basis,” said member Nick Horne. “You can be on the No. 9 tee box and be hitting to the No. 1 green, so you don’t do that everyday out here.”
Horne’s partner was Lee Ziemba, who played at Auburn and for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts.
“I like to try to bring somebody new every year to have fun,” Horne said.
Burns said he enjoys setting up the course and giving the players shots they aren’t accustomed to.
“I go out there and try to give them nine different shots they don’t normally see on a regular basis on the golf course,” Burns said.
“We might go over the trees or we might have to curve it around them.”
The Member-Guest Tournament kicks off Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The tournament will run through Sunday afternoon.
