School systems will have fewer teachers when students return this fall

When students return to classrooms in the Selma and Dallas County school systems this fall, they may notice a few less teachers. We have reported in the last week that Selma City Schools will lose 12 units after enrollment dropped by 200 students. Dallas County lost about the same number of students and 10.5 units.
It might be possible to save some of the positions through federal money or some other dollars, and most of the cuts will be handled through teachers who retire, resign or move to other systems. Still, it’s still a little worrisome to know there will be less teachers in our classrooms this fall.
To that end, superintendents of both system this week spoke about teachers’ commitment to students.
Selma Superintendent Angela Mangum said the system was devoted to its goal to ensure students have a safe and healthy environment to learn in.
It’s going to take that kind of commitment as the schools work to constantly improve and turn the tide on enrollment numbers.
Parents can help by making sure students attend the first weeks of school, when units are decided.
