Two brothers out of Dallas County High School have qualified to compete in the world’s largest rodeo.
Josh Jeter, a senior at DCHS, and sophomore Jacob Jeter earned positions on the Alabama National High School rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Rock Springs, Wyo. July 12-18 to compete at the 67th annual National High School Finals Rodeo.
Josh is competing in the bull riding competition for the third year in a row while his brother has his sights on the rifle and trap shooting championship in his first year at the competition.
“He started shooting this year and he is going to be really good at that,” Josh said. “It’s nice having him up here because usually it’s just me and my parents up here.”
Josh spent Friday night in the hospital after he was spun around and stepped on by a bull at a competition in Shawnee, Okla., but said he would compete in the NHSFR Tuesday night. Josh’s scores were not available before Tuesday’s deadline.
“I’ve been seeing the medical team every morning and afternoon,” Josh said earlier this week.
“I didn’t think I was going to be able to ride at first, but I’ve been seeing the medical team a lot. They know what they are doing so I think I will be ready by Tuesday. I’ll still be sore, but I’ll be able to handle it.”
Josh said he almost had the bull rode until his boot spur got caught in the bull’s flank strap.
“After that he spun around about 10 times with me flying around in the air before I even touched the ground,” Josh said.
The NHSFR features more than 1,500 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian Provinces and Australia.
In addition to competing to be named the NHSFR National Champion, contestants will also be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and $200,000 in prizes.
To earn the title, contestants must finish in the top 20 — based on their combined times-scores in the first two rounds — to advance to Saturday evening’s final round. National Champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.
