Selma’s Jones Free, 12, was presented Wednesday with the Paul Grist Trophy after the Bud Burns Dixie Junior Championship at the Selma Country Club.

The award goes to a Selma player who exemplifies hard work, character and who plays well during the tournament. It was the second straight year Free won the award. He shot a 73 Wednesday, which was seven shots better than his round of 80 Tuesday.

“It feels great,” Free said of the award. “It takes a lot of hard work but it does pay off.”

Tommy Burns, PGA professional with the Selma Country Club, said Free is seemingly always on the course’s putting greens.

“I really am [always here],” Free said. “Playing, putting, chipping, on the range.”

Free nearly shot a personal best Wednesday. His 73 was only three shots off the best score he’s ever had at the Selma Country Club. After just one birdie in his first round, Free had five birdies during the final round. His total score of 153 was good enough for second place in the 11-and 12-year-old age group behind Decatur’s Ryley Heath, who had a 150 total.
