Fourth annual Jazz event to be June 20

The fourth annual Jazz on the Grazz event is encouraging Selmians to jazz up the Queen City.
Jazzy tunes, food, games and much more will work its way through the city on June 20.
The free event will feature performances from live music artists, vendors and much more. Councilwoman Angela Benjamin said the event will center on two components: music and recycling.
A recycling contest will allow participants from different ages groups to compete for a grand prize of $100.
Before the festival started, Benjamin said she thought about some of the great things people see when they travel to other cities and she wanted to bring them to Selma. Through Jazz on the Grazz, she’s been able to make that happen.
“When you’re traveling and you get to venues you have fun at, you think ‘wow that would be wonderful where I live,” she said. “I thought why can’t we do that for the citizens of Selma?”
As a result of that, citizens will enjoy performances from jazz bands and artists like Sarah Crum, Nancy Ziccardi, Jamarcus Legg, the Selma Jazz Trio, the William Barnes Trio, Paul Linden and the William Barnes Quartet at the Saint James Hotel. Lyrical Groove will headline the occasion.
“We have all of these fabulous bands,” Benjamin said. “There’s going to be music all day. For the first time, the headliner is from Selma.”
Just as music will be plentiful in the ears of attendees, vendors and activities will be abundant as well. Benjamin said there will be a variety of vendors, including food and game vendors.
Benjamin said there will be much to enjoy at the occasion, and people should get up, get dressed and attend.
“Everybody should come out and fellowship with the neighbors they know,” she said. “They should also get to know the neighbors they don’t know. Let Selma have some fun.”
Jazz on the Grazz will be held at Phoenix Park at noon until 10 p.m.
There will be an after party event at the St. James Hotel. Attendees are asked to bring their own towels and chairs. For more information, call Benjamin at 349-5389 or Keith at 349-0416.
