The daughter of a notable civil rights icon will make an appearance Tuesday at the Lowndes Interpretive Center.
The National Park Service is sponsoring “A Conversation with Ilyasah Shabazz: Malcolm X and the Voting Rights Movement” as a part of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail’s 50th anniversary lecture series.
Shabazz is the third daughter of Malcolm X. The event will be held June 16.
Shabazz, a community organizer, activist and motivational speaker will discuss and answer questions regarding her father, his legacy in the struggle for Voting and Civil Rights and how she continues to keep her parents’ legacy relevant as a Trustee for the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center in New York City
“She will be here to speak about Malcolm X’s contributions and struggles toward the civil rights movement,” said Patricia Butts, management analyst for the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. “She’ll also speak about both her father and mother’s legacies toward the movement they participated in.”
A question and answer session will also be incorporated into the lecture.
“I think people would come even if it’s to hear another perspective,” she said. “Even if you’re not certain about what Malcolm X stood for I can almost guarantee it’s going to be a interesting dialogue.”
The lecture will be held at the Lowndes Interpretive Center, 7002 Highway 80 East, at 6 p.m. The event is free. For more information, call 877-1983.
