It’s already time for the Selma Farmers Market to be back in business, and locals are sure to be excited for some homegrown vegetables and fruits.

The market allows local farmers to sell their produce, giving buyers the option of healthy, local foods.

Not only is the market a good thing for the farmers, it’s also a good thing for the community. With Dallas County being ranked amongst the highest counties in Alabama for diabetes and hypertension, it’s good that the market is offering people food that’s good for them at an affordable price.

We are glad that Selma has such a nice place for the market, out at Bloch Park, and plenty of vendors that have a variety of items to sell.

The market opens today at 6 a.m. and runs through the afternoon at 2 p.m., or until the vendors run out of produce.

After Saturday, the market will be open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will run through the first week of November.

Although the market is known for its fresh fruit and vegetables, like peaches, watermelon, squash, peas and more, it also has other food and items that are sure to attract people.

Eggs, fresh cut flowers, homemade bread and baked goods, jams, jellies and preserves are some of the items that vendors will have.

The Dallas County Master Gardeners Association will also be at the opening of the market with a display and educational activities on butterflies.

We hope that the community will get out and support the farmers market today, and even make their way over to the Unity in the Community event at Phoenix Park at 4 p.m.
