A high school graduation party in east Selma went awry Thursday night after a 20-year-old Selma man was shot.
According to Sgt. Evelyn Ghant with the Selma Police Department, several shots were fired at a block party at Taylor Field at the East Selma Community Park on the 500 block of Plant Street.
Ghant said investigators learned about the shooting when they received a phone call from the emergency room at Vaughan Regional Medical Center Friday morning around 7 a.m.
“When [officers] arrived at the emergency room they were directed by staff to a 20-year-old male,” Ghant said. “The victim had been shot in the upper back left thigh from what officers believe to have been a small .22 or .25 caliber gun.”
According to Ghant, the shooting happened sometime Thursday night between 11:30 p.m. and 12 a.m.
“According to the victim this was an ‘after graduation block party’ at the baseball field,” Ghant said. “Several people started shooting, and the crowd started to disperse.”
The 20-year-old victim told investigators he took off running from the party when he heard the shots fired. The victim didn’t realize until later that he had been shot in the back of his thigh, but he did not seek immediate medical attention.
It wasn’t until a few hours later that he was taken to the hospital for the wound.
“He went to a friend’s house and early morning he was transported to the Vaughan Regional Medical Center emergency room by a family member,” Ghant said. “The victim was treated and released.”
According to Ghant, no arrest has been made, and the shooting is still under investigation.
The victim could not identify who was shooting at the party and how many shooters there were.
The Selma Police Department is asking for anyone with information on the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 874-2588 or 1-866-442-7463.
