Select students from city schools in third through 12th-grade were honored Thursday night at Selma Mayor George Evans’ fourth annual Achievement Award banquet at the George Evans Reception Hall.

Each city school had the opportunity to nominate one boy and one girl from each grade for the awards.

Evans said the awards were created to honor and recognize students for their achievements, conduct and community service. We think the award ceremony is a great way to show students that the community is behind them in their education and we support them in their academic and community involvement. During the ceremony, students were awarded with medallions, certificates and T-shirts for their accomplishments throughout the school year.

High school seniors had a good reason to smile at the awards as each of them were presented with a $1,500 scholarship provided by Honda Lock, as well as laptop to help them with college.

Not only is the event a positive one for the students in the city schools, but it’s also a great motivation factor for them to try their best during the school year so maybe they can also be recognized and awarded for outstanding achievements.

We hope to see events like this continue to happen, and we applaud the city for stepping up and honoring these students.
