Wet roads are a problem

When it rains as it did seemingly all day Monday, it serves as a reminder of one of Selma’s biggest problems.

Sections of Broad Street, particularly on the outside lanes, are filled with pools of water and make it tough for passersby to make it through. Other streets such as Water Avenue can be ankle deep in spots after just a half hour of heavy storms.

Highland Avenue, like Broad, can make travel difficult and several streets in Old Town have drainage issues too.

Flooding issues obviously aren’t unique to Selma, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be brought to the forefront either.  This is a problem citizens face all too often and will see a lot this week, as rain is in the forecast just about every day.

Combating these problems is obviously easier said than done.

There’s no magic wand that’s going to instantly fix all of the spots where water builds up along the road in Selma, but we encourage city leaders to start taking them one at a time.

Although we haven’t seen any life threatening flooding in recent memory, when Broad Street fills with enough water it turns into a two-lane road in many areas and can be dangerous for drivers, particularly those in the outside lanes.

Drivers need to do their part too. We encourage those behind the wheel to watch their speed and be extra careful in problem areas.

The rain is likely here to stay this week, so be careful on the roads and watch for water buildup.
