Two of Selma’s most wanted were arrested Wednesday after nearly an hour-long standoff with law enforcement officers at George Washington Carver Homes.

Kenyada Dukes, 27, and William Calhoun, 22, were both arrested and charged with probation violation, hindering prosecution and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Jeffery McMillian, who was also in the apartment, was arrested and charged with first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana.

According to Lt. Muhannad with the Selma Police Department, the police department received an anonymous tip on Calhoun’s location.

“When officers arrived at the apartment, they were met with several occupants of the apartment. The lessee was advised that there was a warrant for the arrest of William Calhoun and that they had information that he was currently inside the residence,” Muhannad said.

Calhoun, who was previously convicted of shooting into an occupied building and two counts of first-degree robbery, was wanted in connection to a recent shooting in Selmont, according to District Attorney Michael Jackson.

“The lessee along with other occupants … denied that Mr. Calhoun was inside of the residence as they exited the apartment,” Muhannad said. “They were asked several times were there others inside the residence, [and] after over an hour wait for the housing authority, the lessee gave written consent for officers to search the residence.”

The police department had assistance from multiple agencies, including the Fourth Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force.

“We covered the back and the front, and we talked with the apartment owner,” said task force commander Larry Colston. “It took about an hour to get permission to search, and we finally went in. Kenyada Dukes came out first, and we took him into custody. Then we were finally able to get [Calhoun] out and arrest him.”

According to Muhannad, both suspects came out after a K-9 unit from Perry County was sent into the apartment.

“We had assistance with the Perry County Sheriff’s Department K-9 handler. Once he entered the residence with the K-9, Kenyada Dukes and William Calhoun exited the residence,” Muhannad said.

Dukes is also a convicted felon. He was previously convicted of shooting into an occupied building and first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana.

According to Jackson, both were sentenced to 15-year suspended sentences with probation. With the probation violation charge, Jackson hopes Dukes and Calhoun will have to serve their sentences.

“With all the different crimes they have been involved in, these are two of Selma’s most wanted. We’re glad they are off the streets,” Jackson said. “We’re trying to make sure that they don’t get out again. We’re trying to keep them locked up, but that is up to the judge.”
