Elton Reece, the longtime recreation director for the city of Selma, was honored Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.

Former player and friend Phillip Morgan spoke, as well as interim director Lebo Jones and Elton’s son Todd.

It was important for the city to have a service honoring Reece.

After all, he spent the majority of his days running the city’s recreation programs.

Mayor George Evans also spoke and discussed votes the Dallas County Commission and Selma City Council will hold next week that would name the Dallas County Sportsplex and the Baseball Complex in Reece’s honor.

Considering Reece had a hand in the building of the Sportsplex and spent a lot of his time taking care of both areas, it seems only right that those complexes bare his name.

Players will also be given pins before their first game that they will wear on their hats in his memory. The pins will keep a man that loved baseball close to the game.

We thank those involved in the ceremony Thursday night and for their efforts in making sure Reece is remembered well into the future.
