The doors of the Walton Theater are back open as of Friday night’s premiere of the sci-fi thriller “Insurgent.”

Moviegoers have the All Things Are Possible nonprofit to thank, which is running the theater.

All Things Are Possible CEO John Grayson believes the city will benefit from having the theater back open.

“What we want to do is give young people somewhere to go and entertain themselves,” Grayson said.

The Walton Theater will feature movies on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Adult tickets will be $8.50. Children from ages 2 to 12 will be charged $6. Saturday matinees will begin at 1:30 p.m., when moviegoers will get a $2 discount off normal prices.

Nothing is etched in stone, but the nonprofit hopes to offer many more movies from families to enjoy.

“We have state-of-the-art equipment here at the theater, and, hopefully, we can get some really good movies,” Grayson said. “We want to be a family theater as well as provide entertainment for our community and the city of Selma.”

Employment opportunities may also be down the road, as All Things Are Possible plans to hire at least eight people. Teens and adults will be able to apply for positions at the Walton Theater, once the organization announces those openings.

Just as the nonprofit works to support the community, the theater’s manager Sonya McCall hopes Selmains do the same for the theater.

She said the theater will bring moviegoers the same options that are available at theaters in Montgomery closer to home.

Selma resident Sarah Reeves attended the first showing of “Insurgent” on Friday night. She said she knows what it’s like to have to drive an hour to see new releases. She brought her brother and cousin to the Walton.

“It’s nice to be able to come home and do something in my hometown instead of having to drive to Montgomery,” Reeves said. “I hope it stays open. It’s a good thing for Selma.”

All Things Are Possible plans to hold a grand opening in April.
