Selma gives back to help SABRA

The George P. Evans Reception Hall was packed Thursday night as people and organizations from all over Selma came together for SABRA Sanctuary’s annual Charity Dinner and Auction.
SABRA sold 33 tables for the event as community members came together to celebrate and fellowship but also give back to a nonprofit that serves the victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
The center is likely as busy as ever, since SABRA picked up the slack when Harriet’s House in Demopolis closed at the end of 2014, but based on last night, it looks like the support from the Selma community is as strong as ever too.
Reports show that around 1 in 4 women are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lifetime.
That’s an alarming statistic that sadly isn’t going anywhere, which is why it’s so important that places like SABRA are able to keep their doors open and be able to help the victims.
The people and organizations in Selma never fail to amaze us with how much they are willing to give back to nonprofits. Thursday night was no exception as people bid on live and silent auction items to support SABRA.
Congratulations to those who left with great items, but SABRA and the people it cares for were the real winners Thursday.
However, all of SABRA’s needs could never be met in one night. The nonprofit could always use donations and other assistance.
We encourage Selma to keep on giving — something this community has shown it has no problem doing.
