Don’t forget about the first responders

After such an eventful weekend in Selma, it was encouraging to hear how uneventful things were for our law enforcement officers.
The Selma Police Department made only two arrests at Jubilee events the entire weekend and both of those were for disorderly conduct. After a weekend where more than 100,000 different people made their way into Selma, that’s quite a stat.
That not only reflects well on the people of Selma, but also on the first responders who gave their weekend trying to ensure the safety of all in attendance.
When there’s that many people in one location and the president on site, a lot can go wrong, but thankfully nothing did.
The Selma Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and Selma Fire Department deserve a lot of credit for their planning leading into this weekend.
Proper planning, mixed in with extra law enforcement from all over the state, made this weekend an enjoyable one for the people in Selma.
While the majority of Selma and Dallas County was taking part in all of the jubilee festivities, police officers were ensuring the safety of everyone around us. When people started feeling the effects of the heat Saturday, emergency workers started handing out water.
Sunday when movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge bogged down to the immense amount of people taking part in the jubilee march, extra Alabama State Troopers were called in to help. They directed traffic, which made it much easier for motorists to get in and out of the city, and helped instruct 80,000 people on what they needed to do.
It was a memorable weekend in Selma and one that we’ll all be talking about years into the future, but none of it would’ve been possible without local and non-local first responders.
