Charles Willard Hughey

Charles Willard Hughey of Marion passed away at Southland Nursing Home Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015.
Willard was born in Sprott, Alabama, Apr. 13, 1934, to Marshall Gray Hughey and Oda Mae Nichols Hughey. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Mason Hughey, Edward Carol Hughey and his sister Vivian Ivey.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cordelia Washburn Hughey; daughters Connie Ellis (Aubrey) of Tuscaloosa and Teresa Ham (Alan) and son, Chuck Hughey (Debbie) of Selma; sister Camille Salter (Gary) of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and uncle Thomas Nichols (Dorothy) of Sprott; grandchildren Jason Sherrer, Jessica Hain Spivey (Trey), William Cooper Hain (Haleigh), Shelley Hughey Jordan (Eric) all of Selma, and Sarah Hughey Sudsberry (Steven) of Tuscaloosa; great-grandchildren William Hain Spivey, Madison Jordan, Colton Jordan, Bryant Fisher Hain and Slade Susberry; and devoted friend William Jones.
Willard attended the Perry County public schools, graduating in 1951. He began his construction career in 1952 working with Dewey Osborne. He eventually started his own business building and remodeling houses, including building the house in which he and Cordelia raised their family.
Willard was an avid hunter. He enjoyed spending time with his hunting club. He also loved playing dominos and spending time at the “shed” in his garden, sharing its bounty with the community. He was seen many times visiting the homebound and those in nursing homes. Nurturing those in need was a skill of Mr. Hughey’s. He was loved by all.
Mr. Hughey was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Marion and took care of many behind-the-scenes details.
Officiated by Reverend John Nicholson, services were held Feb. 10, 2015, at Siloam Baptist Church with burial at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma. Pallbearers were Jim Dill, Kit Agee, Sammy Rinehart, William Jones, Alan Ham, Aubrey Ellis, and Gary Salter. Donations can be sent in memory of Willard to Siloam Baptist Church, Marion, or Ephesus Baptist Church, Sprott.
