The fundraiser was held in an effort to help the Walker Track Club attend upcoming meets in California, Maryland and other areas of the United States.

The track and field club teaches youth of Selma the basics of track and field, which prepares them for high school and collegiate teams.

The club goes beyond teaching the fundamentals of track and field, according to coach Jeffrey Walker, to instilling the values of leadership and responsibility.

“I’ve seen a lot of improvement from the youth, as it concerns their attitudes and grades,” he said.

Approximately 200 people participated in the 5K, Walker said. Athletic clubs such as the Alabama Sports Competitors of Birmingham, the Tri-City Striders of Columbus, Ga. and Concordia College’s track and field team took part in the run.

Walker said he believes there was a great turnout because of the youth and the support his club offers.

“We go out and support different clubs,” he said. “We show them love and support, and they return it.”

Gary Mitchell owner of the Alabama Sports Competitors Track Club, said he and his team enjoyed the 5K and their time in Selma.

“We were able to not only experience the 5K, but we walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge,” he said. “It was a great experience to be in the city of Selma for a historic moment.”

Mitchell said he hopes he and his team will be able to continue to support the Walker Track Club.
