The Walker Track Club has plans to run all over the country in 2015, but in order to make all of their scheduled meets they need some help.

The club, which is a member of USA Track & Field, will host the Walker Track Club 5K run/walk for a Healthier New Year Fundraiser Saturday at 10 a.m.

The fundraiser includes a bridge crossing, dinner and concert and a 5K through historic downtown Selma.

“We’ve got a big schedule coming up and we need help with transportation, hotels and registration fees,” said Jeff Walker, who operates the Walker Track Club.

The club has upcoming meets in Birmingham, at LSU and Maryland, so Walker said they need all the help they can get.

The race route will start at Selma High School, go down Broad Street and turn left onto Water Avenue.

It will then turn on Martin Luther King Street, turn left on J.L. Chestnut, make a right on Franklin Street and turn down Memorial Street beside Selma High.

The price to participate in the 5K, dinner and take in the concert is $35.

The cost to only eat dinner and see the concert, which will include gospel groups and soloists, is $15.

The 5K is for all ages. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each age division.

Walker said numerous track clubs are coming from out of town to take part in the 5K but he’s also hoping to get a big turnout from those in Selma.

The first event is at 6:30 a.m., with a coaches, officials, directors and sponsors breakfast. The dinner and the breakfast will take place at Selma High School.

At 9 a.m. there will be a bridge crossing, which Walker put on the schedule to allow those from out of town to see the Edmund Pettus Bridge for the first time.

“A lot of people haven’t been to Selma before and they talk about it, so I thought that would be a great opportunity for them to be able to experience that,” Walker said.

The dinner and concert is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Walker said the dinner will consist of barbeque chicken, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, riblets and more.
