Students with chance to see “Selma”

It’s often difficult for the youth in today’s world to understand the struggles that past generations of people went through. A lot can be learned in the classroom, but sometimes other ways of learning can also be valuable.

Students at Selma High School and other participating schools will get a new perspective Saturday on Bloody Sunday as they will get a chance to see the movie for free at the Walton Theater.

The movie is not a documentary — something we’re sure teachers will point out to the students in attendance — but it does bring into focus the events that occurred 50 years ago.

In today’s technology based world, seeing the movie is the most likely way to keep students engaged and get them thinking about the freedoms they enjoy today.

Members of the Paramount Picture crew will also hold a question and answer session Saturday afternoon at the auditorium at Selma High School. Although they may not realize until later in life, Saturday is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for students in Selma. They have an opportunity to see a film on the same ground where many of their ancestors changed the world years before and then they get 1-on-1 time with the people who made the movie.

We encourage all students to take part in Saturday’s events, which may change the way they view the world.
