A 34-year-old man surrendered at the Dallas County Jail on Monday afternoon after he allegedly murdered his girlfriend in Hoover and left the scene with their 5-year-old daughter.
Jeffery Dewayne Mixon had not been formally charged as of Monday afternoon, but the Hoover Police Department says he will face charges of capital murder and burglary, according to Capt. Gregg Rector, with the Hoover Police Department’s investigative services bureau.
Mixon will be transported from Selma to the Jefferson County Jail.
“It’s horrible any time we have a homicide,” Rector said. “This suspect and victim shared a child together, so it’s just tragic like all others.”
The Hoover Police Department received a call Monday at about 12:20 p.m. from family members of the murdered 34-year-old victim, who lived at Cypress Gardens Apartments in Hoover.
Police have not yet released the name of the victim.
When police arrived, they found the victim dead on the scene. They believe the incident happened shortly before officers were called.
“She, of course, hasn’t been autopsied yet,” Rector said. “We don’t know, but we believe that she did die from some type of knife wounds.”
After interviewing people in the area, police learned that Jeffery had reportedly fled the scene with his daughter, McKenzie Mixon.
Hoover law enforcement received information that Jeffery could be headed to Plantersville or Selma and notified local authorities to be on the lookout for him and his daughter.
Before surrendering, he was last seen Monday at noon driving a 1996 silver Honda Accord.
Sgt. Evelyn Ghant, with the Selma Police Department, said the department was prepared to apprehend Jeffrey.
“The officers here in Selma [were] looking for the vehicle to come through here,” Ghant said. “They knew how to pull him over and make contact with Hoover.”
An Amber Alert was issued for McKenzie. The child was later found safe and unharmed at a relative’s home in Plantersville.
“We didn’t know if the child was in danger or not, but we hoped that the kid wasn’t because it was his own child,” Rector said. “It sounds like he may have not meant any harm to the child, since the child did wind up safe in the hands of family members.”
Rector said additional charges are expected for Jeffery, who may have assaulted two other adults.
No further information has been released regarding possible additional victims.
“He will probably stay in our jail overnight until we get the felony warrants,” Rector said. “When we obtain the warrants, he will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail of the Birmingham division.”
