In 2014, there will be an estimated 1,665,540 new cancer cases diagnosed and 585,720 cancer deaths in the United States. It remains the second most common cause of death in the nation, accounting for nearly one in four deaths.
Because so many are affected by the disease, we knew it was important to see the local community recognize loved ones who have faced cancer at the Relay for Life Selma and Dallas County.
Thanks to the organization, residents were given a chance to have a precious moment as they released lanterns into the sky to honor family members and friends Tuesday night.
The event also raised money for the American Cancer Society, an organization that has dedicated more than a century supporting those affected by cancer and researching the illness to find a cure. Therefore, the benefits of this event reach far beyond Selma and Dallas County.
Like Relay for Life Selma and Dallas County, we hope to see the release of lanterns continue as an annual event.
Just as any community does, the Dallas County area deserves a chance to reflect on this situation, no matter how difficult it can be at times.
Events that like the one that took place Tuesday helps people heal, and showing we care should be a priority.
