The Selma Lady Saints opened basketball season at the Hoover Big Orange tip-off Friday and Saturday, falling in two close games to Robert E. Lee and Buckhorn.
“We are going to be okay,” Selma head coach Anthony Harris said. “We just need to go back to the drawing board and work a little bit defensively. “
Robert E. Lee 54, Selma 41
Selma lost its season opener Friday night to Robert E. Lee 54-41, despite 13 points from Areyana Williams.
Jamya Smith scored eight points for the Saints and J’Tia White had eight rebounds and six blocks.
Buckhorn 61, Selma 56
Selma’s Jaymya Smith hit seven three-pointers but it wasn’t enough, as the Saints fell to Buckhorn 61-56 Saturday in their second game of the Hoover Big Orange tip-off tournament.
Areyana Williams scored 19 points for the Lady Saints, but in the end 38 turnovers were too much for Selma to overcome.
Despite all of the mistakes, Harris thought his team played relatively well.
“We played some good ball this morning,” Harris said. “I think we woke up. We are still trying to find some chemistry. We came up here and lost last year [too], but I see some positive things.”
Selma used a press to get back into the game after Buckhorn threatened to take a big lead and run away for an easy win.
The Lady Saints will play at Keith Friday night in Orrville.
Concordia 76, Jarvis Christian 63
Dennis Miles scored 24 points and added 14 rebounds to lead Concordia College Alabama to a 76-63 victory Saturday over Jarvis Christian.
Guy Barnes and Kendrick Atwood added 16 points apiece for the Hornets. Concordia finished the game 10 for 10 from the free throw line.
The Hornets next game will be at Wallace Community College Selma Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
