The 17-year-old Selma juvenile who allegedly stabbed his 33-year-old uncle Saturday after a verbal disagreement appeared in court Tuesday.
Toborius R. Sheppard, who was charged with first-degree domestic violence assault Saturday, was issued a $15,000 bond in Dallas County Court Tuesday. District Attorney Michael Jackson said he and his legal team requested District Judge Bob Armstrong issue a $100,000 bond.
“Given the serious nature of what he [allegedly] did and the reason for why he [reportedly] stabbed his uncle, the bond should have been much higher,” Jackson said.
Selma Police responded to the 1800 Block of Old Montgomery Highway in reference to a stab victim Saturday at 12:38 a.m. and was directed to Sheppard, according to Lt. Curtis Muhannad with Selma PD.
“The assault reportedly occurred after a verbal altercation, in which his uncle attempted to verbally discipline him about attending school and staying out of the streets,” Muhannad said Saturday.
The assault became physical when Sheppard allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed his uncle twice in the back and once in the chest, according to Selma PD.
After making contact with the victim at the Vaughan Regional Medical Center emergency room, Selma Police learned Saturday he was in critical condition and being sustained for travel to a Montgomery-area hospital. The victim is still in critical condition as of Thursday, Jackson said.
Sheppard’s first-degree domestic violence assault charge is a Class B Felony and carries anywhere between two to 20 years in prison and $30,000 in fines if convicted.
If the victim dies, Sheppard’s charge would be upgraded to murder, which carries a 20 years to a life sentence in prison, Jackson said.
