The Selma City School Board approved its financial plans for the upcoming fiscal year.

With a unanimous vote, the board approved the 2015 budget for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2015. The budget reflects $34.5 million in total revenue and $34.4 in total expenditures.

With the fluctuating reserve of around $2.8 million and the projected reserve set at $2.7 million, board member Kirit Chapatwala mentioned his concern with a drop in reserve.

“There a whole bunch of reasons that contribute to that,” acting Superintendent of Education Larry DiChiara said in response. “We made a conservative effort this summer that added to it, and that was to try to fix up our schools and our building to get them in shape.”

DiChiara said the system should not be concerned with spending money when it’s needed, as long the system continues to meet the one-month operating reserve the Alabama State Department of Education’s requires.

“We can be very proud of the reserve,” DiChiara said.

The projected fund balance ending Sept. 10 was $11.1 million.

There were no changes made to the budget proposed Tuesday during the first of two state-required public budget hearings, according to the system’s chief financial officer Grindal Harris.
