Health event should motivate all of us

It’s time for all of us to get off the couch and be a little more active.
The McRae-Gaines Learning Center and Wallace Community College Selma are joining forces for the Get Fit Selma! Health and Fitness Festival later this month — giving us all an incentive to get up and move a little bit while having fun with others in our community.
The health fair, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at WCCS, will include a 5K run, community fun walk, a jump rope competition and a basketball tournament for children ages 7 through 17.
“We’re trying to make it a little bigger and better this year,” event chair Stephanie Hamm said.
We all need to do our part to make sure this year’s health fair at WCCS is actually bigger and better this time around.
When asked what Selma needs more of, most of us rattle off the exact same response — more fun things to do.
Here’s an example of an event that not only provides fun for the whole family, but also has a health based initiative that our community needs.
Health care professionals will even be present to deliver health screenings and provide information for hypertension, Type II diabetes, obesity and other conditions.
With college football games on Saturday, there’s a lot of incentive to stay inside on the weekends and relax, but staying active is important. As a community, we should embrace events that encourage not only adults, but our youth, to get outside and have a little fun.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the McRae-Gaines Learning Center, which provides academic curriculum in reading, writing, math and science before students enter elementary school.
Let’s make it a goal to get active as a community. Let’s Get Fit Selma!
