Bama Club looks to draw more interest for speaker

The Dallas-Wilcox Bama Club sent out an email Thursday in hopes of drawing more interest for a speaker that will have a lot to say about the Crimson Tide.
Eddie Conyers, who serves as the University of Alabama’s practice referee, is scheduled to speak at the club August 11, but only about 50-60 people have signed up to attend — putting the event in jeopardy.
The email read: “If we do not reach a workable number of attendees,we will postpone the speaker event until we find a time more suitable for a larger turnout. We have to have a minimum number of attendees to avoid running a deficit for the event, which takes money away from our primary responsibility, that is, our scholarship endowment funds.”
Ronnie Leet, who serves as the president of the Dallas-Wilcox Bama Club, said after the email was sent out around a dozen more people signed up to attend, but more are needed to ensure it will go on as planned. The event is scheduled to be held at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center, which is located at 211 Washington Street.
“We have the room and we can take as many people as the Convention Center will hold,” Leet said.
The Bama Club will allow registration through the weekend before deciding Monday whether or not the event will be held.
Conyers has worked as Alabama’s practice days since Paul “Bear” Bryant was coaching the Crimson Tide. Leet said aside from the great stories Conyers will share, he recognizes that behind the scenes the speaker has a direct influence on Crimson Tide’s football team.
“When he throws a flag out there in one of their scrimmages, I’m sure Coach Saban has a reaction like he would during game time,” Leet said. “He’s pretty important to the discipline of the team in respect to what Saban requires out of those young men.”
